Artist Bio: Hannah Regier is a fiber artist whose work showcases the incredible possibilities of natural dyes and fibers. With reverence, sensitivity and curiosity to learn each living material’s language, she wishes for the spirit and stories of the land to speak through the work. Hannah grows and forages all her dye materials within a mile of her studio. Wool and alpaca fiber is sourced directly from local farms and custom spun at a New Hampshire mill. The dyeing techniques are crafted so that the fiber, dyes, and structure interact to express landscape, flow, tension and relationship. Hannah is a second generation professional craftsperson and small scale homesteader, and a multi-generation fiber worker; deeply rooted on land that has been used intensively for 250 years by people of European descent, and is the homeland of the Abenaki people.
Artist Statement about Piece: Gather and Radiate was conceived to concentrate energy from mutuality with land and community. The dye plants, indigo and wild madder, collaborate with each other in the fermentation vat. The wool was received as a gift in exchange for indigo seeds this spring. The dye pattern creates a deep blue channel up the back of the wearer, to direct earth energy up and outward. The red fringes release prayers of compassion to the universe.
The wearer might practice this meditation for courage:
Find a seat on the earth
Feel its warmth
and coolness
Breathe the earthly blue of water, leaves and sky
up through your spine
Receive strength
Gather as much as you need
When warmth has wrapped your heart,
slowly stretch your arms
out from your roots
to embrace everything
Breathe out love
Breathe in strength
Breathe out love
